The Emotional Impact of a Car Accident

Car accidents are extremely traumatic events that can be very stressful. One minute you’re going about your business and the next, you’re in the center of a drama. In an instant, your day, week or even life has changed and the effects will oftentimes linger long after injuries are healed and repairs are made. Here’s what you should know about the emotional aftermath.

Shock- Immediately after a car accident, and for several days afterwards, people usually experience shock. Shock can be different for everyone but common symptoms include a slow or delayed response to the accident, replaying the accident over and over, short temper, and unpredictable mood swings.

Anger- Car accidents leave plenty of anger to go around. You can feel anger towards the person who caused the incident, anger during medical procedures, anger towards others that were involved. Talk to a professional or someone you trust about how you’re feeling and try to let go of the negative emotions.

Guilt- Many drivers beat themselves up over the accident because they think it could have been avoided or they will lament on what they could’ve or should’ve done differently. It is helpful to remind yourself that these expectations are not realistic.  Accidents happen.

Anxiety- Anxiety and depression can be quite common after a car accident. One of the easiest ways to fight anxiety is to talk about it. Returning to your normal routine is also a great way to fight anxiety.  Seek counseling if you or a loved one experiences any signs of anxiety or depression.
