Accidents involving distracted drivers claim thousands of lives every year. You’ve likely heard it’s dangerous to text and drive but here are some other sources of distraction on the road.
- Avoid hands free technology when you’re behind the wheel – You may think it should be OK if you use your headset or a hands-free device but you would be wrong. According to a recent study, after you’re finished making voice commands, you’ll stay distracted from the road for up to 30 seconds. As a result, you might not notice signs, other vehicles, or pedestrians.
- Loud Music – Having your music turned up prevents you from being able to hear important sounds around you like the honking of car horns, the blare of an emergency vehicle, and the screeching of tires.
- Scenery – When you take your attention off of the road to focus on the scenery around you, you could inadvertently swerve into another lane or miss a bend in the road.
- Eating while driving – Potential spills, burns and a slippery driver’s wheel are just a few reasons why driving while eating is a bad idea.
- Reaching for things in the backseat – Make sure you’ve got everything you need in the passenger seat. Grasping behind you makes you nine times more likely to have a car accident.
- Driving with pets – To avoid accidents, make sure to put your pet in the backseat and use some sort of pet restraint.
- Conversation – As humans, we tend to want to look at someone who is speaking to us, thereby creating the even greater hazard of taking our eyes off of the road.
